Prabhu Deva is an Indian dancer, choreographer, actor and director. He has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada films. In a career spanning over 25 years, he has performed and choreographed dance in a number of films. He has also directed and produced several films.
Prabhu Deva was born on 3 April 1973 in Mysore, Karnataka, India to Mahadevayya and Sarojadevi. He has three brothers, Raju Sundaram, Nagendra Prabhu and Sathya. Raju is also a choreographer and has choreographed many songs in Tamil films. Nagendra Prabhu is an actor and has appeared in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Sathya is a film producer.
Prabhu Deva’s father, Mahadevayya, was a popular Kannada comedian. Sarojadevi was a popular Tamil actress. Prabhu Deva’s grandfather, Mugur Sundar, was a famous Tamil film choreographer. Sundar’s brothers, Chinni-Sampath, were also well-known Tamil film choreographers.
Prabhu Deva started learning Bharathanatyam, Western and Kuchipudi dance forms at a very young age. He made his acting debut in the 1984 Tamil film, Vetri. He played the lead role in the film.
In 1987, Prabhu Deva appeared in his first Hindi film, Sarhad Paar. He played a small role in the film.
Prabhu Deva made his debut as a choreographer in the 1989 Tamil film, Indhu. He has choreographed dances for over 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada.
Prabhu Deva made his debut as a director with the 2002 Tamil film, Mugamoodi. He has directed 10 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
In 2010, Prabhu Deva won the National Film Award for Best Choreography for the song, “Bezubaan” from the film, ABCD: Any Body Can Dance.
Prabhu Deva has won several Filmfare and South Indian International Movie Awards for his work in films.
Prabhu Deva is married to Ramlath and the couple have three children, Aishwarya, Vishal and Svetlana.
