Ravichandran Ashwin is an Indian international cricketer. He is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off spin. He is currently the joint-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket for India, with Ravindra Jadeja.
Ashwin plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He is the fastest Indian bowler to reach the 50-wicket mark in Test cricket.
Early life
Ravichandran Ashwin was born on 17 September 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father, Ravishankar Ashwin, is a marine engineer and his mother, Saroja Ashwin, is a homemaker. He has a younger sister, Akila Ashwin, who is a doctor.
Ashwin did his schooling at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. He graduated from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering with a degree in Information Technology.
Domestic career
Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in November 2006, against Hyderabad. He took 4 wickets for 43 runs in the first innings and was named the man of the match.
In the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy, Ashwin took 32 wickets in just six matches at an average of 16.84. This included a match-winning haul of 8 for 106 against Karnataka in the semi-final. He was named the man of the match as Tamil Nadu went on to win the Ranji Trophy for the first time in 15 years.
In the 2010 IPL auction, Ashwin was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for $950,000. He made his IPL debut on 12 March 2010, against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy, with 49 wickets in nine matches. He was also the leading wicket-taker in the 2011–12 Ranji Trophy, with 46 wickets in nine matches.
In September 2011, Ashwin was named in the 15-man squad for the World Cup. However, he did not play in any of the matches as India went on to win the tournament.
In January 2013, Ashwin was bought by the Mumbai Indians for $2 million. He was the leading wicket-taker for the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 IPL, with 22 wickets in 16 matches.
International career
Ashwin made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2011, taking 4 wickets for 31 runs in the first innings. He was named the man of the match as India won by an innings and 15 runs.
In December 2011, Ashwin took his maiden Test five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 156 against Australia in the second Test. He was named the man of the series as India won the series 2–0.
In March 2012, Ashwin took his maiden Test hat-trick, finishing with figures of 6 for 47 against New Zealand in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by an innings and 115 runs.
In August 2012, Ashwin took his maiden Test ten-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 10 for 158 against England in the first Test. He was named the man of the match and the man of the series as India won the series 4–0.
In November 2012, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in England, finishing with figures of 1 for 46 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by nine wickets.
In March 2013, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in Australia, finishing with figures of 1 for 48 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by eight wickets.
In July 2014, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in Sri Lanka, finishing with figures of 1 for 50 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 63 runs.
In November 2014, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in South Africa, finishing with figures of 1 for 49 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 107 runs.
In December 2014, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in New Zealand, finishing with figures of 1 for 53 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 196 runs.
In January 2015, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in England, finishing with figures of 1 for 60 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 95 runs.
In February 2015, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in Bangladesh, finishing with figures of 1 for 61 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 108 runs.
In March 2015, Ashwin took his maiden Test wicket in Australia, finishing with figures of 1 for 70 in the first Test. He was named the man of the match as India won by 48 runs.
