Sonakshi Sinha is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. The daughter of actors Shatrughan and Poonam, she began her career as a model before making her film debut in the action-drama Dabangg (2010). After a series of commercial failures, Sonakshi’s career prospects improved after she played the lead role in the sleeper hit Lootera (2013), and earned critical acclaim for her work in the biopic Shahid (2013) and the action thriller Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014).
In addition to acting in films, Sonakshi is a judge on the television reality show Indian Idol Junior. She is also an active celebrity endorser for various brands and products, and has participated in stage shows and concert tours.
Early life and background
Sonakshi Sinha was born on 2 June 1987 in Mumbai to actors Shatrughan and Poonam. She is the younger of two children; her brother, Luv Sinha, is also an actor. Sinha’s father is a former actor turned politician. Through her father, she is a cousin of actors Sonu, Kunal, Ranbir, and Rhea Kapoor. Veteran actors Sachin Pilgaonkar and Padmini Kolhapure are her maternal aunt and maternal first cousin respectively.
Sinha did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu and graduated in fashion design from Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University.

2009–10: Debut, modelling, and television

While still in college, Sinha was cast as the female lead in Sajid Nadiadwala’s action film, Khaalid Mohammed’s Kismat Konnection (2008) opposite Shahid Kapoor. The film was not successful at the box office. However, her performance was praised.
In 2010, she made her acting debut in the action-drama film Dabangg opposite Salman Khan. The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2010. For her role as Rajjo, a simpleton village girl, Sinha won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
After the release of Dabangg, Sinha began receiving offers for film roles. However, she was not keen on pursuing an acting career and was reluctant to sign up for more films. Nadiadwala then approached her for a role in his film, Joker (2012). She initially refused the offer but later agreed to do the film after being convinced by her father. The film was a critical and commercial failure.
In 2012, Sinha made a special appearance in the item song “Go Go Govinda” in the comedy film Oh My God!. The song was well received and Sinha’s performance was praised.
In 2013, she appeared in two films that were commercial successes: the crime thriller Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara! and the action-comedy Lootera. The former was a sequel to the 2010 film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. The latter was a period romance film set in the 1950s directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Sinha’s performance in the film was praised by critics.
