Yuvraj Singh is an Indian international cricketer who plays all forms of the game. An all-rounder who bats left-handed in the middle-order and bowls right-arm off-spin, he is the son of former Indian fast bowler and Punjabi actor Yograj Singh.
Early life and family
Yuvraj was born on 12 December 1981 in a Sikh family, to Yograj Singh, a former fast bowler and Punjabi movie star, and Shabnam Singh. He has an older sister, Amanpreet Kaur. His paternal grandfather Sardar Bhagwant Singh was a well-known wrestler. His paternal uncles, Bishan Singh Bedi and Madan Lal, were both Test cricketers for India. Bedi is Yuvraj’s childhood hero and he has named his daughter after him.
Singh made his first-class debut for Punjab in late-1997 against Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy. At just under 16 years of age, he was the youngest player in the history of the tournament. A few months later, he scored his maiden first-class century against Himachal Pradesh.
International career
Yuvraj was a key member of the Indian team that won the 2002 ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, finishing as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. He made his ODI debut in October 2000 against Kenya, but was dropped from the team after a series of low scores. He was recalled to the team in late-2001 and made his Test debut against Bangladesh in December that year.
Yuvraj was a member of the Indian squads that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. He was the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup, where he scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and underwent treatment in the United States. He made his comeback to international cricket in September 2012.
Singh announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2019.
